About Prema

Dr. Prema Akasha (a.k.a. Maja Rodé) is a musician, poet, writer, and artist who knows that each of us has the ability to express the beauty and wisdom of our true nature. She finds great joy in sharing her creative gifts and encouraging others to do the same.

After exploring many spiritual paths and traditions, in 1996 Prema met Olga Louchakova and found a deep resonance and direct experience of the nondual teachings of Advaita Vedanta. This led her to study the teachings of Nisargadatta Maharaj and Ramana Maharshi -- including a pilgrimage to meet H.W.L. Poonja in India. Two years later, she met Zen-trained spiritual teacher Adyashanti and has worked closely with him as the Creative Director of his organization since 2000.

Prema’s creative work draws inspiration from Buddhist, Hindu, Sufi, and Judeo-Christian traditions, but springs first and foremost from her own experience and love of That which is the essence and substance of all things. Her expressions take many forms including drawing, collage, poetry, singing, graphic design, and even rap music.

Workshops, Concerts, and Exhibits

Prema’s doctoral studies at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology focused on facilitating creative processes for self-exploration and culminated in her dissertation entitled, "What Is Beauty? A Living Inquiry for the Mind and Heart." While most of her creative energies are channeled into her music, writing, and artwork, Prema occasionally offers workshops, retreats, and classes that open creative channels and empower even the most self-doubting creators. She has presented at the Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy Conference and the Science of Nonduality Conference.

Prema’s music, poetry, and wisdom rap have been a highlight at Adyashanti’s silent retreats for over ten years. More recently, she has enjoyed concert appearances with Amitabhan, Steven Walters and Eric "Rumi" Schneider, as well as guest appearances at Tobin Giblin's Dharma Lounge and other gatherings in the San Francico Bay Area.

Prema occasionally exhibits her mandalas, some of which have been featured in books including Judith Cornell’s award-winning “Mandala: Luminous Symbols for Healing" and "Mandala Healing Kit," Marlis Laudrée's French-laungage book,"The Energy of the Mandala," and even Valerie Rickel's line of Mandala Soaps!
